Netherlands & Mexico to ban wild animals in Circuses
DECEMBER 12, 2014 – BREAKING NEWS! In a huge victory for the animals the federal republic of Mexico ( North America ) has banned wild animal circus acts, with offenders facing fines of up to $225,000 / £150,000 for failure to comply. The legislation, which acknowledges that the basic welfare needs of circus animals cannot be met, now just requires the signature of the President to become law.
DECEMBER 14, 2014 – BREAKING NEWS: The Netherlands has today announced that it will ban wild animals in circuses, HOT ON THE HEELS OF MEXICO BANNING WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES on Thursday. We are pleased that sea lions have been included, having supported efforts by our friends at Wilde Dieren de Tent Uit to show their welfare is compromised and ensure that the ban progressed.

The photo above is from the Big Cat Rescue website, which states that in the U.S., more than fifty local governments have imposed either an outright ban on animal circuses or imposed restrictions on the use of pain inflicting implements such as bullhooks.

UK: Announced its soon-to-be official ban on ALL wild animals in circuses, joining other European nations like Austria, Greece, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The ban is intended to be fully instituted starting in December 2015. Prior to the all-country ban announcement, over 200 UK local authorities had placed bans on animal circuses with over two-thirds banning all performing animals, according to Animal Defenders International. An official date for the legislation still needs to be passed but the government is confident that it will. When it does, anyone who breaks the law after December 2015 will receive a heavy $8,000 fine, according to the BBC.
Following the events in October 2011, in Zanesville, Ohio, when 18 rare Bengal tigers were shot and killed after tigers, ions and bears escaped from a “wild animals preserve” near the highway, Ohio, USA banned the acquisition, sale and breeding of restricted species in Ohio as of Jan. 1, 2014.
