Barney the orange comforter

Barneycomforter

“Writing on Facebook Debbie Ann Le Page stated: “God bless you Barney, remember that lovely sunny afternoon, I laid down on the grass in the cemetery and we cuddled up together for two hours.  I needed a friend that day and there you were my angel!  God bless you.”

He has been known as “Barney, the Cemetery Cat” but I’m calling him Barney, the orange comforter!  For some reason I’m really interested in ginger / marmalade cats, and have no idea why ( maybe it is just because I like the color orange, LOL ).   Anyhow, if anyone thinks or has told you that animals or cats cannot be or are not “spiritual” –  run away, far away.

Here is a beautiful magnificent ginger tabby cat whose Mission on Earth was quite obviously to look after the souls alive and passed, at St Sampson’s Cemetery, in Guernsey, the United Kingdom.

Barney greeted and comforted mourners for 20 years!  I know from having our beloved Shandy for 16 years, that just having a live even if small, dynamic and loving, intelligent warm Be-ing around you – is a source of happiness, comfort and inspiration.

Grounds keeper Alan Curzon said Barney has now been laid to rest at the place where he spent his entire life brightening up the lives of hundreds of people during their darkest moments.  This cat’s owner moved but as the Kitty kept returning to his work-place ( the Cemetery ) the neighborhood made him a home near to the cemetery and fed and cared for him.

Alan said: “When relatives and friends have suffered the awful loss of someone close to them and go to visit a cemetery they are not in the best frame of mind but Barney was always there to cheer them up.”

“For those who entered the cemetery with a heavy heart, he lightened up the experience for them. When people walked through the gates, he often came up to them and brushed against them.”

“There was not a bad bone in his body.”

“We are putting a plaque on the wall and a bench and have found a little space for him in the cemetery where he is buried as well.”

Rest in peace,  “Angel” Barney

Monty Magic

I have fallen in Love …….

with a  Cat !!    Yes, I love Monty Boy, just as much as I still love my beautiful kitty Shandy who sadly passed away on 24 February 2016.   Who wouldn’t love Monty?  He is a little boy, born with a chromosome problem, affecting the bridge of his nose, but fate dealt its hand and he was adopted  by Michael, someone who at that time never dreamed that he would ever have a Cat, let alone fall in love with this Paw-some cat.

Michael & Mikala have an online Etsy shop and sales go toward helping shelter animals.  I have purchased the Fur-ever Calendar and love it.   Will you help too?

https://www.etsy.com/shop/MontyJewelry

Please keep sweeeet Monty Boy Cat in your thoughts / prayers / healing …. as he has trouble at the moment with his kidneys.

I wrote the following poem for Monty Boy.

POEM FOR MONTY

You can follow Monty’s story on Facebook, and the FB videos will show you just how much Monty and Michael love each other.  This love is awe inspiring and touching.  Once you have met Monty Boy, you will never see an animal friend again as “just a pet”.  They are not pets owned by us,   WE  are owned by them, THEY grace us with their joyous, stoic and honest presence.

https://www.facebook.com/Montyboycat/

Thank you Monty Boy Cat.  We love you.

Our beautiful boy Shandy   passed away  on 24 February 2016 at 2.34 pm.

Those who know me well, understand that I believe in a “bigger world” than what there seems.  I believe all Life forms are spiritual beings or sparks of consciousness from the “Divine” or the Source, incarnated into physical forms.

I believe that our Shandy cat was a special Be-ing sent to us, to keep us together and to teach us responsibility and how to Love.  One month has passed now since he departed us, and his messages are still coming in strong.  First of all, let me say that I once experienced a cat that had crossed over, returning in Spirit form, to let us know she was okay and in spirit form.   That was a long time ago, when I began looking into our spiritual essence and connections.  I am positive that Shandy cat will also visit me in Spirit, if I call upon him!

A Tribute to Shandy Cat

IMG_0285

Goodbye to an awesome wise being, our cat friend Shandy.   Shandy our sweeeeet little beautiful furry friend passed away on Wednesday 24 February 2016 at 2.33 pm our time.

Esan & I will miss him and after some time, my grief will heal and his Spirit will carry me on.   Shandy lived with us for 16 years since he was a baby, a gift from Heaven, our Millennium cat whom kept Esan and I together, and taught us responsibility.

His Earthly “tour of duty” is over, but I like to think of him now in Heaven and I told him that I will meet him again one day.   His body just packed up internally and there wasn’t alot that could be done for him to make him comfortable and happy and little chance of a full recovery.  He knew he was ill so we said our Goodbyes.  I played him some music from Lia Scallon’s CD “A Song for the Animals” at our local Veterinarian and that helped.  He went peacefully and we buried him in his garden.

The sweet little pretty Cat that likes to go Hiking !

http://www.boredpanda.com/blind-rescued-cat-stevie-patrick-corr/

Patrick Corr wasn’t a cat person until he met Stevie the blind cat who was in desperate need of a home. She changed him forever. He has said “I didn’t adopt Stevie when she was a kitten. I wasn’t even looking to adopt a cat, but when I heard she badly needed a home, I couldn’t resist.”

“She’s like any cat really, except that she’s blind. I adopted her 3 years ago from a local cat vet hospital as she badly needed a home. The Animal Care Society of Cork had been paying for her stay there for months, as no-one wanted to adopt her. Go figure.”

Happy Birthday Shandy !

Happy Birthday Shandy

On New Year’s Eve 2000 (i.e. 31 December 1999) just before midnight, our “Millenium” gift arrived.

It was a sweeeet small beautiful kitten – peeking out of some rocks (an old covered up well) out the front of of our house.

We decided the kitten must have been 4 to 5 weeks old and so today is designated as Shandy’s birthday!!  Today Shandy is 16 years old.

If you go to the Categories of Posts on this site (on the right-hand side) and click on the drop down arrow, you will see Shandy has his very own Category of posts here on Fascinating Animals.   He is indeed a fascinating animal and is featured on the  “Our Animal Friends”   area of this site too.

Your cat or dog (or any other animal) companion can also be featured on a page of her/his own by going to  this   tab.

I have rather cleverly designed an interactive Happy Birthday  card for Shandy cat’s 14th birthday, 2 years ago.

Please join in wishing him a very nice Birthday by clicking on  THIS  link for the birthday card.   This will open a “dialog” box which will ask if you want to Open or Save “Happy Birthday Shandy.doc” which is a Microsoft Word document.

Please save the Word document somewhere to your computer, then have fun once you open it up to read it.  Double-click on the “loud speaker” pictures/icons.  Make sure the volume on your computer is turned up a little.  Probably don’t use iTunes as it doesn’t seem to work.

If anyone is reading this post, please download the Birthday Card and make a comment on this thread about the card and to wish our beautiful Shandy a happy birthday.  I dis-continued Shandy’s column, because of a lack of feedback or interest in it.  Sometimes people are quite happy & free to give negative feedback, but this Blog hardly gets any positive Comments, for who knows what reason.

Thank you from Shandy.

The Owl and the Pussy Cat

So cute and I’m really glad this little Owlet, Fuku-chan, found a friend in this Scottish Fold kitten, Marimo.   Wonder if they will still be friends when the kitten grows up?  I always research these “cute” photos.  This little Owlet has been captured and lives in a Japanese Owl Cafe, the consolation is that it has a cat friend at least for a while.  I think that Owls shouldn’t be put into Cafes just for the amusement of human beings.   Read more  HERE.

I don’t know when these photos were taken, and I can’t read Japanese, so I can’t tell from the official Hukulou Coffee place what happened.

FREEWAY – Young American Curl Cat Rescue

Nobody knows how this poor 2 year old American Curl ginger cat got stuck on a Freeway in Arizona, with burns to his paw pads and a bleeding mouth and paws ( some Reports say he got burned by a car engine ) but thanks to Richard Christianson, he was rescued – and now he is okay and has been adopted by his rescuer, and named Freeway.

https://www.facebook.com/TheRealMCMagic/videos/923138421042437/

The 15 second video above shows this kitty clinging for his life to a wire fence.  He will need alot of tender love and care, after going through such an experience.  A news report states that Christianson already has 4 dogs and 3 cats.  Freeway the cat is featured on two Facebook pages, one of them is Richard Christianson’s page, if you want to see how he is faring.

Freeway_catSadly, with the publicity & the nature of social media, the “trolls” come also.  Although anyone with a brain and eyes can see that the Video is authentic and that this cat would very likely have been killed if Richard had not rescued him, someone has been nasty to Richard on his Facebook page, saying it was a scam and he is just trying to make money from this.

Yes, someone else set up a Funding page to get some contributions toward paying for Freeway’s substantial veterinary bills, and via that webpage, Richard stated the excess was going to organizations helping animals.

Please post messages of support for Richard on his FB page ( 2nd link below ) if you feel so inclined.

Claw of the Cat, or How many Toes does a Cat have?

catclawThis morning my partner came into my Study and said “Shandy keeps shedding his Claws” and handed me a tiny interesting claw sheath.  I thought to myself “I wonder if that is normal” and “I wonder how much his claws are like our nails?”  Upon reflection, I thought sensibly that cats in the wild need their claws for climbing, hunting and defence.

I found the answers on  THIS  great page of Annie’s “Cat Talk 101” website.  For example, cat’s claws have outer layers called “claw sheaths”, which shed or fall off every few months, leaving behind a nice new sharp claw.  Cats don’t scratch to sharpen their claws, strictly speaking, but to get rid off the itchy old sheaths, which are the outer layer of their claws.

Some also say that cats scratch objects to calm themselves down and ease anxiety.

Apparently it is a myth that cats have got retractable claws.  Their claws are projectile and retractile rather than retractable, meaning they can extend and lengthen or poke out their claws or tuck them in or shorten them but not really consciously completely pull them into their paw pads.

The Claw I looked at is really a sheath of a tiny claw, as the claws renew and the outer husks of the old claw are shed.

The online Encyclopaedia Britannica says the following.

Claw, also called Talon ,  narrow, arched structure that curves downward from the end of a digit in birds, reptiles, many mammals, and some amphibians. It is a hardened (keratinized) modification of the epidermis. Claws may be adapted for scratching, clutching, digging, or climbing. By analogy, the appendages of other lower animals are frequently called claws. The claw’s shape is ordinarily suited to the food-getting habit of the animal. Eagles have long, curved talons for grasping prey; the claws of chickens are short and sturdy, for scratching the ground for food.

There are two mammalian modifications of the claw: the nail and the hoof. A nail is a broad, flat claw on the upper surface of the digit. It is present in mammals, such as primates, that use their appendages for grasping. A hoof is a short, thick structure that surrounds the end of the digit. It is present in various forms in the ungulates, which have a reduced number of digits. Hoofs are an adaptation for running.

Below is a link to pictures from the Children’s EB showing so-called “retractable claws” in action.

http://kids.britannica.com/comptons/art-53056/All-cats-except-the-cheetah-have-retractable-claws

You can see the claw sheathed but with the tip or point of the sharp claw still out from the paw pad, which actually means technically speaking that the claw is not FULLY RECTRACTED or rectractible if this word means completely withdrawn and completely hidden.

I have noticed Shandy cat’s claws sticking out a tiny bit and wondered if his claws really are retractable.  If you had a sharp Stanley Knife with a retractable blade, you would want the blade to be fully retracted into the tool when you store away the knife, not have a horribly sharp and dangerous tip sticking out even a little bit.

The difference between “retractable” and “retractile” is that a cat does not consciously stick out or tuck in its claws, as many people wrongly think.  However, when kitty ( or a big cat ) is relaxed and at ease, like when it is sleeping on someone’s lap, or walking, the claws are partly tucked away within the paw, because the flexor tendons attached to the claws are relaxed, and thus the claws are pulled back.  The tendons tauten to protrude the claw when a cat is alert or hunting, climbing or fighting.

However, I guess the kitty’s claws are withdrawn enough to describe them as retractable for most people.

Ligaments connect bone to bone, while tendons connect bone to muscle. The elastic ligament, pictured in red in the image above, pulls the distal phalanx close to the middle phalanx in order to keep the claws from touching the ground, working in tandem with the relaxed flexor tendon.

Cats walk on the tips and balls of their toes or “digits”.  This is known as digitigrade walking.  Each digit or toe has a claw, and there are usually five toes or digits on each cat forefoot and four on each hindfoot.

A cat’s and a dog’s paw pads are spongy pads of thick skin beneath each foot, assisting with silent movement and protecting the underlying bones and joints from injury during running and jumping.  Digitigrade walking combined with pads and small feet helps a cat move silently.

If you want to read about claws and how they evolved into nails, when Primates came along, please click on  THIS  link to a Google book titled “Mammalogy:  Adaptation, Diversity, Ecology”.

If you want to read about the hoofs or hooves of the “Ungulates”, please click on  THIS  link to “What is an Ungulate?”

By the way, DOGS do not have retractile or projectile claws, but they do walk on their toes, like cats.  Their claws are always exposed, and make dogs well suited to running.  Dogs run on their toes , and have four functional toes on both the front feet and the hind feet, and sometimes a fifth “dew claw” which serves no useful purpose, is not in contact with the ground, and is located higher on the inside of the leg.

You should NOT de-claw a Cat because that essentially means amputating part of her/his foot as opposed to trimming the claws.  We leave Shandy be, and don’t even trim his claws.  A dog’s claws become blunt with lots of walking on hard surfaces, so won’t need trimming usually.

Venus – the Chimera Cat

Venus chimera cat

Meet Venus, a cat with 2 sides.  Venus, a stray cat, sports exactly one half of her face as black with a yellow/green eye, and the other side of her face is ginger with a blue eye!

National Geographic have studied her and say that how this came to be is a mystery to them even.  Naturally, it has to do with the genes of her lineage, which must have included a black cat and a ginger cat.  But the exact mechanism still remains a mystery.

It is rare for a non-white cat to have odd eyes, though this does arise. Normally the odd eyes are caused by a dominant white gene interfering with the way the eye absorbs melanin. It is often believed all odd eyed cats are deaf. In fact many, though not all, white cats with blue eyes are deaf, and around 30% of odd-eyed cats suffer this problem. In the latter case deafness occurs on the side of the blue eye.

Inherited congenital (present from birth) deafness is seen almost exclusively in white coated cats, because of the genes they carry. The dominant white gene causes degeneration of the auditory apparatus of the inner ear and may affect one ear (unilateral) or both ears (bilateral), and is linked to blue eyes.  THIS  post here explains that, however, not all blue-eyed white cats are deaf.

The scientific word for having “odd eyes” is heterochromia iridis.  One theory is that Venus is the result of a real, albeit relatively rare condition where two genetically distinct embryos merge in the womb.To find out if this is the case, genetic testing would be required says Leslie Lyons,a professor at the University of California. With samples of skin from each side of the cat, “we can do a DNA fingerprint—just like on CSI—and the DNA from one side of the body should be different than the other.”

But National Geographic says that – cat eyes are typically green or yellow, not blue. A blue-eyed cat is typically a Siamese or else a cat with a lot of white on them. Venus appears to have only a white patch on her chest, which to Lyons is not enough to explain the blue eye.”

Venus cat

One theory is that perhaps the black coloration was randomly activated in all the cells on one side of her face, while the orange coloration was activated on the other, and the two patches met at the midline of her body as she developed.

Either way, Venus the cat is a happy, healthy normal cat, and is adored by her South Florida owner, Christina, who in 2009 took her from a dairy farm in North Carolina, U.S.A.  Venus even has her own Facebook page.

https://www.facebook.com/VenusTheAmazingChimeraCat

She is now an Ambassador for shelter cats at her own website, and if you love her that much, you can buy a soft plush Gund toy of her!

http://venustwofacecat.wix.com/venustwofacecat

The You Tube video below shows Venus with her toy self.  You can probably get the toy now from eBay.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGP7NJX2zkI

Venus chimera cat2

Christina remembers she thought ‘Oh my God, that cat is so cute’ when her friend in North Carolina posted pictures of the two-faced cat on Facebook . “At the time I had an orange cat and a black cat — this looked like a combination of both of our cats” Christina said.

On a friend’s suggestion, Venus’ new owners named her Venus for “beauty and love.”  Venus, chimera or not, is certainly spreading around the beauty and love now she has been made famous through the internet.

Kittens abandoned in the Woods

Cat saves 4 year old Boy

Who says Cats only care about themselves?  This is a true story that happened on 13th May 2014, when a domesticated short-haired tabby moggy ran to a little boy’s defence, as the boy was attacked by a dog that obviously thought the boy was “prey”.   This amazing brave cat leaps onto the dog and chases it around the car, before running back to check on the boy.  There are many stories I personally know about the higher intelligence and spirituality of Cats, and this is another I can add to my repertoire.

Four year old Jeremy had been on his bike, walking it up the family driveway when the next door neighbor’s dog trotted around a parked car and tore into the boy’s leg, dragging him off the bike.

That’s when Tara, the cat, appeared on the scene, leaping on top of the dog, scaring it away. The kitty then went after the dog long enough to make sure it stayed away. The startling scene was captured in a one-minute clip compiled by Jeremy’s dad, Roger Triantafilo.

Jeremy’s mother talks about it  HERE

The article at the page below explains that Tara was a stray whom followed the family home one night six years ago.  Looks clearly like one of Tara’s “briefs” or “missions” is to protect her friend Jeremy!

Shih-Tzu cares for Kitten

shih tzu and adopted kitten

Goldie, a five year old female Shih-Tzu somehow became lost, or was abandoned. Despite her own troubles, she adopted and took up the care of a five week old defenceless kitten. In 2013 Anderson County Animal Control Officer Michelle Smith got a call about a whimpering dog, and discovered at the bottom of a ravine of a South Carolina Home Depot a healthy Shih Tzu nursing a kitten.
Smith took the unlikely duo to local animal shelter Anderson County PAWS where the animals were placed in an enclosure together.

Today, Goldie the dog and Kate the kitten are happy and healthy in their new home, and their unlikely friendship has touched many lives, including that of the animal control officer who found them.
“Good things happen all the time, but ‘great’ happens seldom,” Michelle said. “This is enough to keep me going the next six or eight months. This is one example of why I love my job.”

I think it is cute how the animal friends are similiar in coloration and pattern. They are both blackish / brownish and white. Maybe the kitten looked a bit like one of Goldie’s pups might look like. Anyhow, it goes to confirm something that MY CAT TAUGHT ME – that all sentient (living) animals have an instinct or need to look after something else living.

Shandy’s Breakfast

Well, I have discontinued the monthly “Cat-man-do” columns updating readers about Shandy cat, because it seemed that nobody except my friend Billy in the U.S.A. ever read them.  In posting them, anyway, it was as much a strategy for me as it was for our cat.  I read somewhere that if you are busy, as I am, running multiple blogs & sites, working, helping others, and writing a book, that it can be a good idea to write & post a regular post on one’s Blog, so I thought what better subject than to blog regularly about than one of my best buddies, Shandy?

So, no more  cat-man-do  posts unless there is a popular demand for their return (and Shandy & I have the time and energy to post them), and instead a random blog post about Shandy cat.  In between posting about my cat friend, I will post here on Fascinating Animals, what I like, when I feel inclined to do so.  So, there you have it.

Shandy catThis photo was taken on 7 January 2014

In this photo Shandy is looking a little solemn and sleepy, perhaps due to the run of hot weather we are having here Down Under, and the fact that he has a fur coat.

Beautiful Cats & Beautiful People – true story of Niko

Niko the cat

Here is a story that will truly “warm your cockles” if that means it will make you feel warm & fuzzy, and glad that there are people around who care about lost and abandoned animals.  It began in November 2011 when a tiny kitten in a terrible state of health was found and taken care of by a loving man.  The kitten’s first six months with her foster parents were videoed so that she could be transferred to a good home once she had recovered, though at times, her human adopters worried that she would not recover ..

Click on “Full Screen” to watch full screen, or click on “You Tube” to watch it directly on You Tube.

Warning:  video shows how bad the kitten’s eyes were with conjunctivitis, at which you can just turn your face away or close your eyes, but please do continue watching the Video after that.

Now, here is a Follow-up Video, recorded 12 months later, and even though it is in Japanese, anyone with a brain can see what the outcome is …..

Made my heart melt and my eyes tear up –  this story has “made my day.”   May Niko live a long, happy & healthy life.
