Who Is the Strongest?

READ  MORE   HERE   !

The half inch long dung beetles are the strongest living creatures on Earth. The male insects of this small species of insects can lift or pull 1141 times their own body weight. It is just like an average sized human carrying 80 tons or 72574.8 kg.

The news might take the shine off the title of World’s Strongest Man for Lithuanian Zydrunas Savickas; in 2009 he pulled a 70-tonne plane for 30m in under 75 seconds – this works out as only 411 times his 170kg body weight.

What makes dung beetles so strong?

Written Mar 26, 2016  by John Cassis

Small creatures all seem strong relative to their size, because their strength is relative to the cross sectional *area* of their muscles, not their weight or volume. If you double the length of an organism, the muscle cross-section goes up four-fold, but the weight and volume go up 8 fold – so you get bigger-er not stronger-er.

Another way of looking at it is that if a dung beetle can lift it’s own weight, then if it were to double in size, it could only lift half of its weight, without developing proportionally bulkier muscles.

This topic was famously covered in a 1928 essay by JBS Haldane, called “On being the right size”. I think it’s one of the most lucid science essays I’ve ever read.

http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20161121-the-worlds-strongest-animal-can-lift-staggering-weights

Well, today at work I was barely able to lift a heavy box (to me) of files, weighing 15 kg.  My weight is 43 kg only, and if I take the load ( 15 ) and divide it by my personal petite weight ( of 43 kg), the result is 0.35 – which is a very rough SWR !!

STRENGTH TO WEIGHT RATIO

The Link above does mention working out this ratio uses averages including “Bench presses”.  You may, like me, innocently ask “But what IS a Bench press ??”    It is laying on your back and picking up weights on a bar and raising them up and straight above, in my terms.  Looks dangerous to me!  Wikipedia says:

The bench press is an upper body strength training exercise that consists of pressing a weight upwards from a supine position. … A barbell is generally used to hold the weight, but a pair of dumbbells can also be used.

This page  HERE  mentions averaging out your ratios after different types of exercises, like squats and bench presses.  The closest I note that matches lifting a heavy (for me) box is the DEADLIFT –  read  HERE for info.

However, my “dead-weight Lift” involved a square shape and a dense solid mass, not a nice (looking) bar with weights at either end – this different structure makes a difference to your SWR.

The box I lifted was destined to go to an off-site storage company, that has a weight limit for each packed box (to be picked up and carried by their drivers) – – – and that Limit is 16 kg.  Not bad therefore that I could lift 15 kg, in my great opinion.

My 43 kg weight converts to 95 pounds.   I used   THIS  site to work out that (in theory) a 45 kg female could or should (if she wanted) lift a 26 kg dead-weight.   Speaking for myself, I had best do some intense “resistance” (strength) training, before I attempt picking up and lifting a BARBELL (bar to attach weights to)  with any weights on it at all !!

If you are keen to find out more about weight training equipment for human beings,  try  THIS  page.  It mentions the lightest weight plates (which affix to the barbell) are 2.5 pounds for Americans or 1.13 kg for Australians.  It seems an average barbell itself (without the weights at the end) weighs 20 kg.  It would be a great day when I  dead-lift 21 kg total (barbell + 0.5 kg weight at each end), let alone 26 kg -barbell plus a 3kg weight at each end.

That would mean a SWR of approximately 0.5 up alot from an SWR of 0.35 for my “dead-box” lift today (LOL).  I would be happy with being able to lift 50% of my body weight, even if the Weaver Ant can lift 10 to 50 times its body weight !!

Help Shady

shady-april-martines

Shady is a 6 year old kitty whom is in need of urgent Veterinary help.  If he does not have surgery soon, he will probably die. However, surgery CAN help Shady.  His “owners” have already spent a fortune on a first operation to save his Life but all that is standing in the way now of operating in order to fix Shady so he can resume a normal life, is the green stuff.

https://www.gofundme.com/saving-shadys-life

If you can DONATE a dollar or five dollars or whatever amount you can, or know someone who can, please do so now by clicking on the Link above.  Seriously, is there even one person out there who is reading this, and will HELP where it counts ??

Shady’s “owners” have already taken out Loans so there’s no need to tell them to get some credit or Loans.  If you have hundreds of dollars or a thousand that is surplus, consider dontaing it to saving an innocent life.  Yes you can donate it to another cause, but if you really feel COMPELLED to help save this sweet little SIX YEAR old cat ( not very old ) …… your doing so  NOW  will be so very much appreciated by beautiful Shady !

Collective Hearts save abandoned Pup

Jakk puppy

A deformed puppy was abandoned in a Skip or a Dumpster in Western Australia recently, out the back of a “Hungry Jacks” restaurant.  Luckily for this little fellow, whom has been named Jakk, an employee heard his cries and took it upon herself to look in the bin, where she rescued this cute pup.

Jakk may have “swimmers syndrome” – one of his front legs is crooked and the other has a paw with only a few toes.  WA Pet Project took him on, and Jakk’s temporary carer Edith has said she has no hard feelings against whoever dumped him, who MAY be backyard breeders.  For a lovely photo of Jakk and more on this story, click on the Link below.

The sweet little pretty Cat that likes to go Hiking !

http://www.boredpanda.com/blind-rescued-cat-stevie-patrick-corr/

Patrick Corr wasn’t a cat person until he met Stevie the blind cat who was in desperate need of a home. She changed him forever. He has said “I didn’t adopt Stevie when she was a kitten. I wasn’t even looking to adopt a cat, but when I heard she badly needed a home, I couldn’t resist.”

“She’s like any cat really, except that she’s blind. I adopted her 3 years ago from a local cat vet hospital as she badly needed a home. The Animal Care Society of Cork had been paying for her stay there for months, as no-one wanted to adopt her. Go figure.”

Smart machine feeds Strays – highlights abandoned Turkey pets

vending-machine-feeds-stray-animals-in-exchange-for-recycled-bottles-1

To raise awareness, a Turkish company, Pudgeon, has designed an innovative vending machine that not only helps feed these stray animals but takes care of recycling, too. When you feed the machine a plastic bottle, it disperses food and water for stray cats and dogs.

Hopefully this concept will get the outside world as well as the authorities in Turkey doing something to humanely decrease the plethora of stray animals roaming Turkey streets.

Can a Horse feel Guilt ?

Well, I believe that all animals have Souls and that non-human animals also have intelligence, and in fact, some have more intelligence than some human beings.  I also believe that some non-human animals can also feel emotions and feelings – emotions being feelings that are expressed physically.

If you are at all interested or drawn to communicating with animals, please pursue that interest, as the World would benefit, I think, from Homo sapiens or human beings genuinely connecting with their animal companions and the animal world at large.

There are plenty of resources for this, excellent books, and Animal Communicators, that run courses in communicating with animals, and / or who will connect with your special Animal friend as a service they run, and give you messages from them, or relay questions from your animal companions.

A load of “bunkum”, some of you say?  “That’s strange” or “I don’t understand that” others may decry.  Well, consider this – communication is universal.  The spoken language had to start somewhere.  It is made up.  Communication also exists as mental images and concepts which are on the “air-waves” or which are conveyed by the intention of the sender, as frequencies of energy which an open and devoted receiver can pick up.

I have personally experienced it myself.  It’s called telepathy.  Once a baby human being telepathically spoke to me, and if Homo sapiens can pick up telepathic messages from other human beings, why can’t they pick up telepathic messages from non human beings?   Please visit the page below to explore further.

Talk to the Animals

Now, to answer the Question that is the Title of this Post,
the answer is YES.

Click on the Link below to read the true story of a racehorse that felt guilt over a little girl.

http://spirit-animals.com/animals/the-unhappy-racehorse/

Animals are not lesser beings.  They may serve a purpose to some human beings, but should be treated with respect, as David Attenborough says.  We use tools, don’t we, like knives & forks, and computers, but don’t say they are lesser things than us.

In my “books” or viewpoint,  ALL LIFE  is sacred in terms of, yes, some of us may eat animals, and I have heard that some animals are aware of this purpose or relationship and accept it, but let’s not go over-board and take more than we need, or out-rightly abuse various animal species as just commodities, for our own pleasure or profit.   Farming animals uses an enormous amount of land that could be used to grow & harvest plants for human consumption.

Remember the following, that we all came / come from the “primoridal soup” or from the hot ocean vents, and the predecessors/ancestors of Homo sapiens and other Animals are the same – bacteria !!  This is according to scientists, like Professor Brian Cox, and the point is that just because we human beings CAN “conquer” or farm and trap non-human animals, CAN is not a good reason for actually doing so – to the extent that we are being cruel to animals and degrading our Earth.

We CAN eat with our fingers but in the so-called civilized countries, we DON’T.  It’s our CHOICE what we do with this beautiful and fascinating World that we live in.

NOW, for this Post’s Poll !

In the Beginning was ……  no, you CAN’T choose Aliens or God or Nothing or the Void, because the Poll is actually about either Light or Sound

I once attended an Astrology course and had an argument with the teacher about whether Light or Sound was in the VERY beginning, the first thing emanating from the “Void”.  You may choose to say there was both Light and Sound at the same time, but it will be interesting to see how many choose only “Light” and how many choose only “Sound.”

This Post  about what physicist Professor Brian Cox says about “what makes the universe up or down” may help you answer.

Cat saves 4 year old Boy

Who says Cats only care about themselves?  This is a true story that happened on 13th May 2014, when a domesticated short-haired tabby moggy ran to a little boy’s defence, as the boy was attacked by a dog that obviously thought the boy was “prey”.   This amazing brave cat leaps onto the dog and chases it around the car, before running back to check on the boy.  There are many stories I personally know about the higher intelligence and spirituality of Cats, and this is another I can add to my repertoire.

Four year old Jeremy had been on his bike, walking it up the family driveway when the next door neighbor’s dog trotted around a parked car and tore into the boy’s leg, dragging him off the bike.

That’s when Tara, the cat, appeared on the scene, leaping on top of the dog, scaring it away. The kitty then went after the dog long enough to make sure it stayed away. The startling scene was captured in a one-minute clip compiled by Jeremy’s dad, Roger Triantafilo.

Jeremy’s mother talks about it  HERE

The article at the page below explains that Tara was a stray whom followed the family home one night six years ago.  Looks clearly like one of Tara’s “briefs” or “missions” is to protect her friend Jeremy!

Stop the landfill of the Dugong habitat in Okinawa

Urgent stamp

Please sign and share this   PETITION   calling on Okinawa Governor Nakaima to deny the landfill application for the waters of Henoko.

Okinawa dugong, a close relative of the manatee and the northernmost population of its species, is now on the verge of extinction. The dugong, a gentle marine mammal once commonly seen around Okinawa, has long been a symbol of the sea rich in life. The coast off Henoko, in Nago, still beautiful with wildlife such as corals and turtles, holds a rich sea-grass colony where the dugong feed.

However, there are plans to landfill this area to construct a US military base.

In March, Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera filed with Okinawa Governor Hirokazu Nakaima an application for approval to landfill waters off Henoko in order to build a new base. This filing used an environmental assessment conducted by the Defense Bureau to claim that the dugongs will “stay far away from the construction site”.

The Governor has already expressed grave concerns regarding the environmental assessment and impact on the welfare of local residents. In response, the Defense Bureau has simply maintained its assertion that the dugongs would not be affected.

But on September 22, Kyodo News broke the story that the Defense Bureau had actively hidden important facts about dugong activity in Henoko waters uncovered during its environmental assessment.

Dugong feeding traces had been found in the waters off Henoko through April to June last year and a dugong was sighted in Oura Bay, adjacent to the Henoko beach. It’s clear that for the Defense Bureau, those findings constituted ‘inconvenient truths’ better hidden from the public.

The Governor will make his decision on the project before December. If this project is carried out, the Henoko seagrass beds, together with the Okinawa dugong, will be lost forever.

We hope all the people of the world will join us in an effort to continue to co-exist with the dugongs. Please sign and share our   petition   calling on Okinawa Governor Nakaima to deny the landfill application for the waters of Henoko.

Sounds – Test your Hearing

Pitch or frequency is measured in Hertz and Kilohertz (kHz), while the loudness or amplitude of sound is measured in Decibels.  As amplitude increases, intensity also increases.  Intensity is the amount of energy a sound has over an area.  The more energy a sound wave has, the higher its amplitude or loudness.

A sound you hear in a large area is more intense if you hear it in a smaller area.  In other words, the same sound has greater intensity or is louder in a smaller area or in the area where the sound immediately emanates from.  This is because the  energy of a particular sound distributed throughout a smaller area means more sound waves per unit of space, compared to the same sound distributed throughout a much bigger area.  In other words, in layman’s terms, the further away you are from a sound, the less likely you can hear it.

A whisper is about 10 decibels while thunder is 100 decibels.  Normal conversation is around 60 decibels, and an operating lawn mower, 100 decibels loud.  The weakest sound that can be heard is measured at 0 decibel.  There are such things as “decibel meters” which allow one to measure how loud a sound is.

Muscles & Muscle Strain

Last Tuesday I had to walk down 12 flights of stairs in a high-rise office building because the Lifts suddenly went out of order.  Well, I had to “pay” for that later, in terms of my leg muscles being very sore for two to three days afterward.  I was not happy.  I work on 2 floors having to go upstairs and downstairs (or use the Lift if it is working) many times a day and a week.

After this temporary muscle strain, whenever I went downstairs, my calf muscle in one leg or the other or the muscles in my upper legs on the front hurt.  Apparently, walking down the stairs causes more strain on the calf muscles, than does walking up the stairs, because it requires more force to control the muscles in a downward movement, than going upward when the momentum of your whole body helps exert the force for your muscles to help propel your legs!

What my Cat taught me

cropped-shandy-lying

1.  It is important / essential in life to care for and look after another sentient (living) being.

 2.  Cats can smile.  They have feelings and emotions.

 3.  Each being knows what he or she needs and is entitled to it and should go for it intutively.

 4.  Every person is responsible for his or her own decisions, as is every cat.

First of all, so I don’t have to write it out again here, please see this post   here   ( on the Our Animal Friends main tab ) to read about our cat Shandy, and to see photos of him.

Dental care for Humans – Part One

Dentistry is the branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures, and their impact on the human body.

Human beings are the species Homo sapiens, and they belong to the Animal Kingdom.  They are definitely not Plants, are they?   Therefore, Homo sapiens appear in this blog.  Following up on Part 2 of Bits and Bites about the structure and function of human teeth, this post is about dental care for human beings.  Dental care for your animal companions is in the form of your dog and/or cat cleaning their own teeth through chewing and using their own protective saliva, and is achieved through you the “owner” taking your animal friend to the vet if she/he (the cat or dog) needs dental treatment.  Non-human animals don’t use toothbrushes and neither do they eat sugary food or many carbohydrates, which can cause tooth decay to humans if human beings eat such and don’t exercise basic daily care of their teeth.

Dental care for human beings – Part Two

Crowns

dental_crown

No, I am not talking about the crown that a king or a queen puts on his/her head, but about dental crowns!  A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth, to cover the tooth to restore its shape, size and strength, and improve its appearance. The dental crown, when cemented into place, fully encases the entire visible portion of a tooth that lies at and above the gum line.

A dental crown can be used to protect a weak tooth from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth, to restore an already broken tooth or a tooth that has been severely worn down, to cover and support a tooth with a large filling when there isn’t a lot of tooth left, or to hold a dental bridge (crowns on teeth on either side of a gap) in place.

Crown or Filling??  A dental crown will cost substantially more than a filling. A filling will take just one visit to complete while a dental crown will require two visits to the dentist. Dentists recommend dental crowns for teeth that have sustained a significant amount of damage, and your dentist will be the best person to answer the question whether your damaged tooth needs a crown or a filling.

Hopefully, you will never need a dental crown, if you look after your teeth well.

More information can be read about dental crowns at this page   here.   You need to go twice to the dentist because on the first visit, your dentist will use a paste or putty to make an impression of the tooth to receive the crown.  Then, the Crown needs to be made, and on your second visit, the crown will be affixed regally to your poor tooth.

Root Canal

The often dreaded and seen to be tortuous Root canal treatment is used to save a tooth which would otherwise need to be removed.  It is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury.

The term “Root canal” is the term used to describe the natural cavity (pulp) within the center of the tooth.  A tooth’s nerve and pulp can become irritated, inflamed, and infected due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on a tooth, and/or large fillings, a crack or chip in the tooth, or trauma to the face.

This treatment requires two or three visits, at least two.  On the first visit, your dentist will access the root canal via a hole drilled into the tooth and will clean, medicate and seal the root canal (pulp cavity).  On the second visit, a polymer substance called gutta percha will be piped into the root canal and a composite filling added to close the access hole or gap in the tooth’s enamel covering.

Furthermore, the dentist will probably recommend that you get a Crown put over the tooth because the removal of the pulp will mean limited blood supply to the tooth dentin, thus weakening the tooth.  Adding a dental crown will give more rigorous protection, and of course will mean another visit to the dentist.

Root Canal

You can read more about the procedure for a Root Canal at this link   here  from which the picture above is taken from.

At the time of posting this, it can cost $950 or more in Australia for one root canal treatment, so it is wisest to do your very best to avoid having to get a Root Canal treatment – in order to avoid the multiple visits, the large cost involved, and of course to avoid the pain and discomfort, that having a tooth problem bad enough for a root canal, brings.

 Orthodontics and Braces

Orthodontics is a type of dental treatment that aims to improve the appearance, position and function of crooked or abnormally arranged teeth.  One example of orthodontic treatment is the use of braces, which are a device used to gradually reposition crooked teeth to a more favorable alignment.
