Finding Gobi

Update – help refuge animals in China & buy a soft plush GOBI

Gobi toys and Books on Etsy

.

Magical – if there was only one word I could use to describe this adventure set out so articulately and heartfeltly by Dion Leonard, this is it.

I won a copy of the book “Finding Gobi” through a Channel 7 “Sunday Night” competition, and was over the moon to receive my book last week, together with a compliments slip from the Seven Network:  Congratulations!  We hope you enjoy reading about Gobi as much as you loved watching her on our show.  With compliments from Sunday Night.

To win this prize, my entry in the competition mentioned my considering that I have an indefinable connection to animals ( see “Animals connecting to Celine” ) …. What I was trying to say is that there is sometimes a magical and beautiful relationship or connection between non-human animals and human beings.  Yes, I’ve heard that animals know human nature or people’s personalities instinctively, like they will know definitely if you are either an “animal lover” or an “animal hater” but Gobi’s and Dion’s story goes beyond that.

I have witnessed my own animal spiritual ally, Shandy cat, whom spent 16 years with me, being with me definitely on a mission.  That mission I am pretty sure, was to keep my partner & I together, because we had this charming, handsome, character of a cat to tend to and to love, and to give and receive companionship.  Shandy literally was the glue that stuck us together.

I can’t wait to watch the film of “Finding Gobi” as long as, of course, no animals are hurt or killed during the making of the film.

I loved Dion’s excellent literary prowess in his writing and his candid capture of his child-hood and glimpses into character building experiences which were like jig-saw puzzles that fit into his entire life.  Here I witnessed, through words on a page, a man whom not only has incredible physical fortitude and the iron will to compete and to win, but whom is compassionate and honest and intelligent.  Above all, without giving away too much for those who have not yet read the book, something was outstanding to me – about Dion’s approach to Life.

MAKE A DECISION

Dion Leonard is someone who knows about choices – there are many roads to China, as the saying goes, and sometimes there are clouds of uncertainty flurrying around a particular choice in front of you, BUT that is what life is about in its finest details –  CHOICES.

Gobi chose to follow Dion and to become his life-time spiritual ally ( woohoo ), and ..

Dion chose to find Gobi … and in an un-swerving manner … not to let down a cute little spirited dog whom raced across the Gobi desert with him …. as Dion points out …. to teach him things about himself and the teaching is never ending.

We have heard talk about past beings we know who have reincarnated to help us, and about spirit guides in some sort of energy form visiting us or coming into our lives, to help us.  I believe in these things, but whether or not it applies to the story of Dion and Gobi, matters not.

Gobi is a special little dog whom showed someone to open up more, to reinforce the message of inter-dependence and being inter-connected, whom is a model of courage and strength under fire, and has unconditional love for Dion and his family.  This story truly is a testament to the fact that non-human animals are not commodities or lesser beings.  They have souls.

I can vouch for the fact, that when our Shandy cat (who was abandoned as a kitten outside our house on New Year’s Eve, 2000) was a few weeks old, we were standing indoors looking out at the back yard.  I looked down at this sweet little kitten and he looked up at me, with a shining face and he smiled at me, the most loving smile of unconditional love that I have ever seen.   I know about the look of love and appreciation that Gobi gave Dion as they ran through the Gobi Desert.

Our animal companions are not “dumb animals” far from it.  They are stoic and brave, go for what they want, let others know what they want, they can be very loving and some are amazingly caring and intelligent and help their human companions …. in various ways …. such as Gobi did.

Collective Hearts save abandoned Pup

Jakk puppy

A deformed puppy was abandoned in a Skip or a Dumpster in Western Australia recently, out the back of a “Hungry Jacks” restaurant.  Luckily for this little fellow, whom has been named Jakk, an employee heard his cries and took it upon herself to look in the bin, where she rescued this cute pup.

Jakk may have “swimmers syndrome” – one of his front legs is crooked and the other has a paw with only a few toes.  WA Pet Project took him on, and Jakk’s temporary carer Edith has said she has no hard feelings against whoever dumped him, who MAY be backyard breeders.  For a lovely photo of Jakk and more on this story, click on the Link below.

Smart machine feeds Strays – highlights abandoned Turkey pets

vending-machine-feeds-stray-animals-in-exchange-for-recycled-bottles-1

To raise awareness, a Turkish company, Pudgeon, has designed an innovative vending machine that not only helps feed these stray animals but takes care of recycling, too. When you feed the machine a plastic bottle, it disperses food and water for stray cats and dogs.

Hopefully this concept will get the outside world as well as the authorities in Turkey doing something to humanely decrease the plethora of stray animals roaming Turkey streets.

Shih-Tzu cares for Kitten

shih tzu and adopted kitten

Goldie, a five year old female Shih-Tzu somehow became lost, or was abandoned. Despite her own troubles, she adopted and took up the care of a five week old defenceless kitten. In 2013 Anderson County Animal Control Officer Michelle Smith got a call about a whimpering dog, and discovered at the bottom of a ravine of a South Carolina Home Depot a healthy Shih Tzu nursing a kitten.
Smith took the unlikely duo to local animal shelter Anderson County PAWS where the animals were placed in an enclosure together.

Today, Goldie the dog and Kate the kitten are happy and healthy in their new home, and their unlikely friendship has touched many lives, including that of the animal control officer who found them.
“Good things happen all the time, but ‘great’ happens seldom,” Michelle said. “This is enough to keep me going the next six or eight months. This is one example of why I love my job.”

I think it is cute how the animal friends are similiar in coloration and pattern. They are both blackish / brownish and white. Maybe the kitten looked a bit like one of Goldie’s pups might look like. Anyhow, it goes to confirm something that MY CAT TAUGHT ME – that all sentient (living) animals have an instinct or need to look after something else living.

Vintage Dalmation Dog Brooch

E8939.1L E8939.2L

Here is my beautiful 3-D Dalmation Dog brooch I bought from Elaine’s Antiques & Collectibles   in April 2013.

The eyes and nose are done in shiny black enamel, while most of the goldtone body is covered with pave crystal clear rhinestones.

Black rhinestones represent the spots. All stones are clear and present, and the clasp opens easily and fastens securely.  This piece measures 2 1/8″ tall and 2″ in diameter, at its widest point. This unsigned brooch is in very good condition.   This piece always gets attention whenever I wear it.

A Dog is a Child’s Best Friend – Comforting Newtown, Connecticut

Golden Retriever Puppies

Please read this article linked below about how some beautiful Golden Retrievers are helping the children at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Connecticut.   I have said to my sister that sometimes I would much rather live with an orang utan than with human beings.   20 children were killed and the others left scarred for life.   If you want stricter gun control in the U.S.A. please consider signing this online petition   here.

Please click on the link below to read how the dogs & the Lutheran Church Charities are helping.

Sniffer or Detection Dogs & Police Dogs

United States of America

South Coast K9 Training – Florida, U.S.A. training video

Remember if you get a dog for personal protection or to protect your family, the dog can’t fire a gun, but an armed intruder can.  So, if you have your dog leashed out-doors within firing range, your dog is at risk of being shot and killed by an intruder with a gun, despite the dog’s barking waking you up so you can then get your gun – or run out the other door.

A police dog is trained specifically to assist police and other law-enforcement personnel in their work.  Police dogs are often referred to as “K-9s” (a homophone or play on the word “canine”). The most commonly used breeds are the German Shepherd and the Belgian Malinois.   In many jurisdictions the intentional injuring or killing of a police dog is a felony and a growing number of law-enforcement organizations outfit dogs with bullet proof vests, police badges and ID collars. Furthermore, a police dog killed in the line of duty is often given a full police funeral.   See  here  for police dog equipment and the history of police dogs in the U.S.A.

European dogs are chosen because they have the drive to keep on fighting when injured (but this doesn’t mean all dogs of these breeds would) . It takes a physically and mentally strong dog to do that, and the dogs that are chosen to be trained also have to be very intelligent and intuitive, able to ‘read’ situations, quick at learning and responsive to the handler.   Some police dogs, usually male dogs, get injured or even killed by criminals that carry knives or guns.

Australia

AUTHORITIES have issued a warning to passengers entering Australian airports with gifts over Christmas – we’ll be smelling you.

Thirty-seven sniffer dogs will be on duty at Sydney’s international airport and mail centre as part of a nationwide push to protect Australian borders.

More than 7000 high-risk items have been seized in Sydney over the past year, including sausages and fruit and veg, as well as animal skulls, a taxidermy wild boar and goat hooves.

And with the traditional Christmas spike in incoming packages, border authorities are on high alert, Federal Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig says.

“At Christmas time we know there’s about a seven per cent increase in passenger movements and mail, so we make sure there are staff available to meet that demand,” Senator Ludwig told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

Heart-kun – Puppy with a Heart

Born on May 18, 2007, this cute long coated male Chihuahua bears a perfect heart shape on his coat.  His owner and breeder, Emiko Sakurada of Odate in the Japanese prefecture of Akita, aptly named him Heart-kun.  Sakurada, who says she’s bred more than 1,000 Chihuahua puppies, said she’d never seen one with markings like Heart-kun.

Heart-kun’s mother gave birth to a new litter of puppies in August 2009, and one of the four tiny pups shares the unique heart-shaped coat marking.  Sakurada has named the new puppy Love-kun, and, although she generally sells the puppies she breeds, she has no intention of parting with Heart-kun or Love-kun.

In that same year, 2009, Heart-kun became a father, and sired a pup with a heart-shaped marking.  The pup has been called Kokoro-chan.

Munro – Staffordshire puppy learns to walk

Bondi Vet – Series 4 – Episode 16

A Staffordshire bull terrier puppy has a disorder, Swimmer’s Syndrome, so the Bondi Junction Vet, Dr Chris Brown, gets creative and makes a customised jacket for her to help her breathe, and she has Aquarobics in her owner’s pool to strengthen her legs.  After 3 weeks, she is better, thanks to Bondi Vet (New South Wales, Australia).  She learns to walk for the first time.   What a sweeeeet puppy.  When I saw her , my heart just melted.   I am so glad Munro’s owner got help for her!!   I love Munro, she is beautiful in temperament, spirit and appearance.  You have to watch the whole video to look at the whole of Munro’s story, or at least fast forward past the “cat and the snake” story to Munro’s therapy.

Animals connecting to Celine

Baby Woylie

Baby Woylie

Background to this following Article:

The following is a nice anecdote that my sister, Therese, wrote about my affinity with animals.

cat-divider

I hereby attest that the animals of this world have an affinity with my sister, Celine, as the following descriptions show.  I am recording the experiences that show a definite connection between creatures and Celine.  The animals respect Celine, treating her as a kindred spirit!

1.    Small dog puts both paws on Celine’s knees, ignores all other people.

At a family get together, Celine and I were standing apart from the others.  Celine was standing a fair way away from me.  A small dog was wandering around.  The dog and Celine espied each other and Celine indicated to the dog a little bit.  Without much ado, the dog went straight up to Celine and, without Celine’s bidding, put its paws squarely on Celine’s knee and looked up at Celine.  Whereupon, Celine patted the small dog and said some encouraging words.

Later on, the dog was seen by me wandering around.  I didn’t see it approach anyone else.  Although I looked at it and tried to communicate non-verbally to it to come to me, it completely ignored me.  The small dog only liked Celine, so it seemed!  It found a friend in Celine because it immediately went up to Celine and with no hesitation whatsoever put it’s paws trustingly on Celine’s knee.

I thought I would list the books I have, about Animals! I have just acquired a companion book to one of my very favourites, being “Strongheart Story of a Wonder Dog”. The companion book is J. Allen Boone’s 1959 edition of “Letters to Strongheart”.   I have just ordered the 1959 Letters to Strongheart and it is on its way to me as I write this.  You can read about the book “Strongheart – Story of a Wonder Dog” at this post   here.

I love reading and writing.  All of my many books are cherished by me, because I am a “bookworm”.  I am also a “read-worm” if that term exists, as I am always reading things – WordPress Blogs, labels on food containers, road signs, car signs, anything and everything.

Strongheart

Strongheart

Strongheart

An Excerpt from the LA Times newspaper follows – — Los Angeles Times Aug. 2, 1925 and June 25, 1929

Strongheart, born 1917 in Wroclaw, Poland, died June 24, 1929 in Hollywood, was a veteran canine actor, trained in the kennels of the Berlin police department. He had a gallant record of service in the German Red Cross in World War I.

Strongheart’s first picture, “The Silent Call,” met with sensational success. Among his subsequent starring movies were “Brawn of the North,” “The Love Master,” “White Fang” and “North Star.”

The veteran canine actor, especially beloved of children the world over, was the first animal to obtain stardom on the screen. His sensational success was the signal for a mad rush to Hollywood by the masters of his canine brethren.

The name Strongheart was decided upon by the publicity department of the motion-picture studio where the dog first worked. His original name, Etzel Von Oeringen was too long and complicated.

Strongheart has been so well trained in police methods that he can tear the clothing of a person to shreds, knock him about in a terrifying manner, and (for screen purposes) kill him deader than a door nail without leaving a scratch to tell the story.
